An alcohol ban and dry January – time to take a closer look at some non-alcoholic options.
The key to any great non-alcoholic drink is to keep it simple and to prepare it right. While these drinks need more attention than their alcoholic counterparts to be interesting on the palate, it’s important to keep things simple by using everyday ingredients and easy preparation methods.
That’s why one of our favourite non-alcohol ingredients is tonic water. A slightly bitter carbonated beverage that is always both interesting and refreshing. You know it from the ever popular G&T, but what you may not know is that it pairs beautifully with fruit juices.
Amazing with grapefruit juice and a bit of lime juice.
Equally amazing with pomegranate or cranberry juice. Orange juice also works well. Tomato juice too.
Charge up any of these tonic water and fruit juice combinations by adding a dash of bitters, because as we know, bitters makes everything pop.
Ready to try one? Kick things off with a virgin version of the famous Singapore Sling. Combine equal parts pineapple juice, mango juice, pomegranate juice, add a splash of lime juice, top up with tonic water and garnish with sprigs of mint.
For the more advanced, make a simple syrup and infuse it with rosemary, mint, juniper, green tea, or citrus zest, or a combination of these. Add tonic water and lime juice, and as always, serve it cold.
Don’t worry too much about specific measures for these drinks. Experiment with a few pours and you will soon find the proportions that work for you.
